Manual Therapy

Manual physical therapy refers to the specific form of treatment in which your therapist uses “hands-on” treatment to deliver pressure, massage or manipulation to your muscles, fascia, other soft tissues or joints in order to decrease pain and restore normal movement. Manual therapy techniques are typically utilized to promote adaptation of tissues, decrease tissue restrictions, increase blood flow circulation and promote tissue healing.
Treatment is specifically based upon examination. The problems detected are treated using specially selected methods, including, for example:

Joint Mobilization

Usually, if you have a pulled muscle in the neck or back, you’re instructed to treat it with heat or ice. While these treatments may provide temporary relief, the pain soon returns. With joint mobilization, the restricted joints are loosened up through manual therapy by providing amplitude and slow velocity to the affected joint. The joint is moved in a manner that the patient cannot do on their own.

Maitland Method

The Maitland® Concept is principally concerned with the specific examination and treatment of pain and problems in the musculoskeletal system. The Maitland Method uses passive and accessory joint mobilizations to treat mechanical pain and stiffness. The mobilizations create movement within the dysfunctional joints which reduces stiffness and makes movement easier and ultimately reduces pain.

Soft Tissue Mobilization

Muscles play an important role around the joints. If there is too much tension, there can be muscle spasm and joint dysfunction. With soft tissue mobilization, the fibrous muscle tissue is broken up. Typically, this is scar tissue or adhesions. This procedure is often applied to the musculature surrounding the spine and consists of deep pressure and rhythmic stretching. A layer-by-layer assessment is done by the physical therapist to localize the affected area. Soft tissue mobilization can also involve placing a traction force on the affected area. All around, soft tissue mobilization has helped reduce pain and remove restricted movement in many patients.

Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle energy techniques are implemented by a physical therapist to lengthen shortened muscles and to mobilize restricted joints. A voluntary contraction is utilized against a controlled counterforce applied from the physical therapist from a specific direction and position. It’s an active procedure and generally well tolerated by patients.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a technique that works like a standard massage, but specialized instruments are used in place of a physical therapist’s hands. By using different tools, angles and pressures, we can focus on a specific layer of soft tissue during treatment. These instruments provide effective treatment for muscle, ligament and tendon injuries.

Rapid Release Technology

High-speed vibration therapy has been around for years, and the Rapid Release device was one of the original innovators of hand-held vibration therapy to improve function and reduce pain. Rapid Release is a lightweight FDA registered Class 1 medical device that is ergonomically designed to provide the maximum amount of comfort to patients and practitioners. Five built-in treatment heads deliver precise, continuous vibration treating a variety of aches and pains. Using the Rapid Release provides a variety of dynamic ranges to safely and effectively treat the smallest TMJ muscles to the more expansive muscles (quadriceps, hamstrings, lower back, etc).

Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercises are movements and physical activities designed to restore function and flexibility, improve strength and decrease pain. Functional tests are performed to assess your condition to develop a program of therapeutic exercises designed to promote healing and improve function.
Examples of therapeutic exercises include:
The type of exercise included in your care will depend on your stage of healing and physical limitations. For example, you may begin with range of motion exercises, then progress to resistive exercises as your functional abilities improve. Your treatment plan will progressively build as you heal and gain strength, with the ultimate goal of restoring movement, function and flexibility.
